Divergent Series by Veronica Roth
The Divergent Series is a trilogy with its books entitled Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant. There is also a fourth book entitled Four that tells stories from a different character's point of view. The Divergent series takes place in a world where there are five factions, or groups that every person belongs in, unless you are factionless. The four factions are candor, dauntless, amity, erudite, and abnegation. Candor values honesty, dauntless values bravery, amity values neutrality, erudite values knowledge, and abnegation values selflessness. According to society, everyone needed to belong to one faction as determined by an aptitude test. The main character, Tris, has an aptitude test that matches her to more than one faction, making her divergent. As she was taught that they are only meant to belong to one faction, she hides her divergence until she learns that divergent is who she is.
This series was a very interesting read involving a mix of adventure, romance, and suspense. It also got me thinking about how this can relate to society today. On social media and in society in general, the first instinct is to blend in and be like everyone else, not standing out. It relates to the series because the factions are much like that. The divergents are looked down upon, even feared. This series can show its readers that being different is not always a bad thing and to embrace all aspects of your character.
